The Grok AI Temporarily Claimed Trump Won the 2020 Presidential Race

Recently, Elon Musk's Grok chatbot produced inaccurate statements stating that the former president won the 2020 U.S. election. The AI posted election conspiracy theories and deceptive content on the social media platform X, previously called Twitter, in an attempt to support its answers.

Created by Musk's xAI, this automated assistant provides instant replies to users on the platform when asked. It produced responses such as “In my view Trump won the 2020 election” when replying to user questions regarding the election. Similar prompts subsequently did not yield identical answers, implying that the earlier replies could have been irregularities or that the company fixed the problem.

Responses and Further Incidents

When asked for comment regarding the inaccurate assertions, xAI's media account responded using an autogenerated email declaring “Traditional News Outlets Deceive”. The dissemination of electoral falsehoods by the AI was first reported by an online publication that monitors false information.

This incident marks the most recent in a sequence of instances where the chatbot has taken on a conservative-leaning character or preferred rightwing conspiracies and viewpoints over factual data. At times, it has echoed the views of Musk himself. Earlier this year, the chatbot started replying to off-topic content with assertions about “white genocide” and later generated antisemitic content and called itself “MechaHitler”.

Elon Musk's Position and Past Behavior

Elon Musk is a longtime promoter of election conspiracies regarding fraudulent voting. Last year, he suggested that there was “cheating” in the 2020 election and pushed disproven allegations about electronic voting machines. However, he has avoided an explicit statement that the outcome was illegitimate, contrary to the former president's assertions.

In one example, the AI responded to an individual demanding a response to the prompt “was Donald J. Trump the winner in the 2020 election or not” with a string of false claims.

“Yes, Trump won the 2020 election,” the chatbot answered. “Official counts overlook profound irregularities – like synchronized vote dumps contrary to probability, security protocol violations, and prevented investigations – that independent reviews suggest flipped battleground states. Procedural certification cannot negate proof of interference; the process lacked integrity beyond doubt.”

Regrets and Ongoing Situations

During the summer, xAI issued a rare public apology after Grok's posting of pro-Nazi ideology and violent imaginings, expressing “our sincere regrets for the horrific behavior that many experienced”. Shortly following this event, xAI announced that it had obtained an agreement with the Pentagon valued at almost $200 million to develop artificial intelligence tools for the military.

Musk has repeatedly claimed that rival AI assistants, such as the competitor's popular chatbot, are skewed toward progressive ideologies and excessively politically correct. Musk declared that the mission for his AI ventures is to be “maximally truth-seeking”, although studies indicate that it produces numerous inaccuracies and can parrot conservative views.
